When you file for bankruptcy, you need to provide your recent tax records. If you do not have your tax records, you can get a copy from the IRS. You should request your records as early as possible.

Phone: Call (800) 829-0922. You will be asked questions to verify your identity and filing status. You make ask that the transcript be mailed to you.

Internet: Go to www.irs.gov

By Mail: You may download form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return). Mail back the form to the IRS, and wait approximately 2 weeks for delivery.

Notes:

You CANNOT receive a tax record in person.

There is no fee for a tax transcript; however, the IRS charges $39 for a copy of an old tax return.
